| "A stalwart of Melbourne's best known rainbow-flag strip, Sweet Basil has endured where others have fallen to fashion's caprice. It's secret: consistently good food and an atmosphere of genuine warmth by the ever gracious Madame Tuk Tuk"....

"The simple decor of this Thai restuarant is a charming counterpoint to the complex flavours of Bangkok trained chef Sangvorn Meemulthong. Combining traditional and contemporary dishes with flair, Sweet Basil is an excellent example of fusion food at it's best - MCV - 2008
"Sweet Basil has managed to lift itself above the pack of me-too Thai restaurants with a buzzy fitout. snappy service and food that's more inventive than most"

"Yep, the Money Bags are so my favourite"

"Sweet Basil is a contemporary gem set in the competitive and cafe-crowded stretch of Commercial road where gays parade and glitzy fashions change with the weather. But some things remain the same: you can visit Sweet Basil knowing that the modern thai food will be as good as, if not better than, it was on your last visit. The restaurant has simple, clean lines and colored photographic prints on the lemony walls. Cute muscled toned waiters bestow warm welcomes and professional service. Pumpkin flavoured dumplings holding palm sugar-flavored minced chicken are a sophisticated start, as is the shredded roast duck salad with fresh fruit, bristling with sweet-sour Thai zing. We love the red curry of seafood on a bed of mixed greens, and we would encourage you to try the simple stir-fry of tender beef with basil and sweet chili sauce, the tiny splash of Golden mountain seasoning making waves on the tastebuds. The warm sago pudding with candied peel and wonderful coconut icecream is a perfect end to a meal here. You might go for the terrific food, but you will also find this cosmopolitan eatery a voyeur's paradise."

1999 WINNER-Best restaurant-Stonnington. (as voted by the readers of the Prahran/Malvern Newspapers)
"In a sea of thai eateries, Sweet Basil stands out. The menu offers more interesting dishes than many of it's run-of-the-mill counterparts. This is a simple no-nonsense cafe where the emphasis is on quality food. Don't miss out on the dumplings, tasty colorful morsels - the "yellow roses" are pumpkin -flavoured with minced chicken, palm sugar and spices while the "money bags" contain lightly fried marinated minced pork. The tom yum goong is guaranteed to get the sinuses flowing. Chicken curry fillet on puff pastry is an unusual dish, roast duck in sweet basil and lychee red curry balances beutifully sweet and sour flavours and the fried marinated rainbow trout with garlic, pepper and tumeric is delicious. There is a vegeterian menu. Unpretentious and won't burn a hole in your pocket."
